About Gates End

Gates End is an independent Canadian publishing imprint created for books that ask why, look deeper, and leave something behind.

We are drawn to thoughtful nonfiction, memoir, and reflective work that values honesty, clarity, and lived experience over noise.

Our first title, The Things We Choose to Carry, is a memoir about family, loss, love, responsibility, resilience, and the questions that remain long after the events themselves have passed.

Why Gates End

The name Gates End came from something quite literal: two gates and the end of a field.

The first gate opened onto six acres of farmland. At the far corner stood another gate. It marked the field’s end, but not the end of the journey. Beyond it was substantially more farmland.

Visually, the name Gates End simply made sense.

Only later did its larger meaning become apparent. A gate can look like a boundary when it is closed. Open it, and it becomes a passage to somewhere beyond what you could see before.

A book can be much the same. You can reach the last page, close the cover, and leave it behind. But sometimes a book takes you beyond its ending. Something in it stays with you, changes what you see, or becomes part of what you carry as you continue forward.

The end is not necessarily where the journey stops. Sometimes, it is simply another gate to open.

The Approach

Gates End began with the experience of bringing one book into the world carefully and independently.

Independent publishing does not have to mean improvised. It can mean deliberate: giving a work the time it needs, questioning decisions rather than following convention automatically, and treating editing, design, production and presentation as parts of the same responsibility.

The book comes first. The purpose is not simply to put words between two covers, but to preserve what made those words worth writing in the first place.

Some stories entertain us. Others stay with us.
That is the kind of book Gates End exists to publish.
